Boston is a compact, historic city that is perfect for walking around. The city has many well preserved historic buildings, the most famous of which is Faneuil Hall which was built in the 1740s. The hall has always been a market with an upstairs meeting hall, and with the adjacent Quincy Market has become one of the city?s foremost attractions. Fish mongers and butchers still have stalls in Quincy Market?s warehouses, but they now share space with trendy cafés, bars and shops and street performers regularly perform outside. Beacon Hill is easily identified by the gilt dome of the Massachusetts State House. Other historical buildings on the hill include the Old State House and the Old South Meeting House, where a 1774 grievance session about a new tax turned into the Boston Tea Party. Just across the Charles River from Boston is Cambridge, home to Harvard University and crammed with all the book shops, cafés, restaurants and shops you would expect to find in a university town. Bunker Hill Monument and Monument Square, lined with restored Colonial and Federal houses, can be found in the Charlestown area of the city. |
